2004 saw the conception of GANGHUT which took place at Spike Island in Bristol as a result of a residency by Kevin Reid. During this time he began to make sculptural and film works concerning hideaways and group mentality. From this he worked towards an installation and event under the moniker GANGHUTand the initial core Gang was assembled from artists and friends. Together GANGHUT created an event in the main space at Spike Island, which was built over a 7-day period in a 24/7 gallery live-in environment.

The structures were designed as modular multi purpose units, for instance the sleeping hut where all of GANGHUT slept for a week was adapted into a double screen cinema and stage for the weekend that the event was open to the public. The watchtower was also adapted to house a loudspeaker unit, DJ booth and was connected to do live broadcasts over the Internet.

A wider pool of artists, musicians and general public was sourced and donated time, artworks, tools and instruments for either help with the build or to show or perform over the 3-day event. Throughout the whole build and event a strong identity for the project could be seen with all the GANGHUT members wearing the same uniform both in the event proximity and outside in public drawing attention to the festival.
